Apple Australia keeps warranty policy changes from consumers.

Last Friday Australian Apple retail stores and authorised resellers were notified internally about changes to their warranty policy's. Apple now must fall in line with Australian consumer law and offer 24 months warranty on all of it's electronic devices. These laws actually came into effect January 1st, 2011, so why has Apple taken so long to make the changes and inform customers of their rights?

The Australian consumer law states a statutory warranty as a "reasonable" period of time but does not go as far to define that time period. Instead the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) suggested any large or expensive piece of electronic equipment can be up to 24 months.

Apple has not officially announced the changes on their website and many consumers on forums believe employees will not proactively inform them of the changes to the warranty policy. Fairfax media claim to have seen the email distributed to Apple's stores saying it told the staff not to mention the policy changes to customers.

Hopefully Apple will proactively inform customers of the changes as it will only enhance their fantastic customer service that has made them a leader in electronics and retail worldwide.

Apple's new policy begins on all iOS devices on Monday 25th March, then applies to all Mac products 2 weeks later.

Jailbreak Tweaks that Rock!!!

So you have recently jailbroken your iPhone and want to add some tweaks that will make your device kick ass??

Here's my list of Tweaks that rock my iPhone 5.

SbSettings - A Must have tweak! Easily access options like WiFi, Airplane Mode and Bluetooth with a single swipe of your status bar. Plus Safemode is installed so you can trouble shoot your device without the pain of a restore!

Intelliscreen X - This is the way your Lockscreen and Notification Center should be. You can tweak your Notification Center to your hearts content. Tweak also comes with Messages+ so you can reply to iMessages/SMS without leaving the app you are currently using.

Activator - You can assign functions to your device using swipe gestures. Don't like opening Siri with a long hold on the home button change it to a long hold of Power button. The sky is the limit!

Zephyr - Forget clicking the home button twice to bring up Multitasking. A simple swipe from the bottom of the screen will do it. Totally customizable to how many fingers you want to swipe with.

iFile - Access your device system files like you are using a Mac. Perfect for trouble shooting and saving files from the Interwebs in tandem with Safari Download Manager.

Safari Download Manager - Ever wanted to download files whilst browsing on your device? Well you can with this tweak then email or add to dropbox.

Springtomize 2 - This little gem will let you virtually customize every aspect of your device. Springboard look, Icons, Folders, App Switcher, Dock, Animations and yer Lock Screen will never look stale again.

Call Bar - Answer and make phone calls using a swipe gesture. Call Bar will let you use your phone as a notification bar along the top of screen. Perfect to keep browsing or an app open whilst on a call.

AnyAttach - Adds a paperclip to your emails allowing you to add files from Dropbox, photo Albums and iFile. Email as it should be.

Auxo - App Switcher as it should be! Live views of apps currently open in your App Switch. Awesome redesigned music player and the ability to turn on functions like Blutooth, Wifi, Airplane Mode and many others.

Browser Chooser - Sick of Safari being your stock browser. Browser Chooser allows you to choose your default browser perfect for lovers of Chrome.

Camera Tweak - Add awesome functions to your stock camera. Separate Focus and exposure, frame rate settings for video, time lapse photos and timer burst shots.

Flex - This tweak is a crowd sourced mod that lets you virtually modify any installed apps on your device. I use it to remove sponsored ads on my Facebook timeline. It's always evolving as devs upload new tweaks.

Protube Extension for Youtube - Protube alters the already installed Google Youtube app to allow you to download videos to your device. Heaps of great functions included.

SwipeSelection - Sick of correcting mistakes when typing by holding your finger down on the word? This tweak allows you to easily swipe your finger across the keyboard to move your curser to the place it needs to be.

Team Jailbreak!

Without a doubt the iPhone is one of the most compelling electronic devices to hit the mainstream consumer market in the last 10 years. Year over sales figures have proven that people cannot get enough of these amazing little devices that have jettisoned us into a world of people staring into their devices every 10 minutes. We are basically carrying around a phone, dvd, iPod, gaming console and computer all rolled into one device making the concepts created in Star Trek seem not so far off in our future.

Sometimes I walk into an Apple Store just to see the amazement on people's faces as they hold and use an iDevice for the first time. As a self confessed geek it gives me much pleasure watching the amazement on a persons face as their mind is blown. In saying that nothing is perfect and Apple's iOS operating system is definitely proof that perfection has not been achieved and most likely never will, as you can't please everybody.

Over the years of being an iOS addict I've read the arguments about what would make iOS a better experience. The constant bickering between Apple fanboy's, mobile enthusiasts and the endless faceless trolls in forums and tech articles throw around their opinions like they have all the answers. As it stands Apple may have changed the way we think about mobile computing but since the inception of the iPhone in 2007 they have been quite conservative in regards to growing the operating system.

My first iOS device was the iPhone 3G. My previous phone was a motorola flip phone so the change was astonishing. After the first 2 weeks as an iOS owner I stumbled across the term "Jailbreak" and after a couple of days of reading decided to take the plunge and free my iPhone. As I ran the Redsn0w program my heart was in my throat, worried that my new $900 device was about to die a premature death before I fully explored its capabilities. Thankfully everything went ok and I now was open to modify my device to my hearts content.

I had only just begun to understand how to use iTunes so the introduction of Cydia on my home screen was very overwhelming. Being a longtime tech enthusiast it didn't take long before I was tweaking, respringing and theming my iPhone like most who jailbreak to the point of overkill. Thankfully a few weeks later my obsession with Cydia became more refined and practical, before long I had the perfect iPhone.

So why do people jailbreak? Jailbreaking isn't for everybody, clearly the number of people jailbroken to the number of iOS devices in the wild proves this point. The people who do jailbreak want to extend the already amazing functions that iOS provide, making a better experience than Apples closed concepts. I love the fact that I can add multitasking gestures, make toggles easily accessible and deliver information on my lockscreen that I just can't get from stock iOS.

Over the years jailbreaking has earned it's fair share of negative press for piracy. The fact is most people who jailbreak their devices don't pirate apps and just want to have more freedom on their devices. With everything in life there will always be a minority who spoil it for the majority. We live in a society driven by negative press, people will always remember the negatives over the positives. Just look at the nightly news on television. 30 minutes of doom and gloom which always ends on a story of a fluffy dog riding a skateboard in an attempt to help you forget the horrors you've just been subjected to.

The stories surrounding jailbreaking of voiding your warrantee and bricking your device sent fear into your everyday consumer as Apple scrambled with each iOS update to fix the exploits used. Jailbreak developers continued to create awesome tweaks and find new exploits to keep devices jailbroken and before long we began to see Apple implement jailbreak tweaks into iOS. As time has gone on iOS has integrated many jailbreak tweaks along with awesome new features like iCloud and Siri proving that the jailbreak community is a necessary evil to Apple. Most likely why they never really tried to kill it with the same passion they have attacked Google and Samsung in the courts.

With each new iDevice the timeframe for a new jailbreak to be released has stretched out to over 6 months. Finding the necessary exploits to open up Apple's iOS has become like finding a needle in a haystack. Quite a few jailbreak developers have gone on to work at Apple, Google and Facebook also. Earlier this year it seemed many had given up on a jailbreak even being released. Others felt like they had no need to jailbreak any longer as recent iOS updates had filled the void previously filled by jailbreak tweaks. After a long 6 months on stock iOS I myself questioned if I would jailbreak again, but as soon as the Evasi0n jailbreak was released i jumped on it.

So why do I jailbreak? Flexibility!!
I love the fact that I can tweak things to my liking and enjoy getting into the core system of iOS to better understand exactly how it all works. I'm a tech junky who loves to tinker. Sure, I could buy myself an android and tinker to my hearts content but I'm in love with Apple products. I don't want to have to settle for a phone that I don't like. I want an iPhone and am willing to sit through the resprings and trial and error of finding the right combination of tweaks to make my iOS device stable and perfect for my lifestyle. I also love having something unique to other iOS users. Honestly it's great talking to another iPhone lover and showing them what my iPhone can do compared to theirs.

I'm glad Apple never went thermonuclear on jailbreaking. Over the years jailbreaking has proven to be an asset to Apple in developing new features for iOS updates. Hopefully as Apple continue to innovate and develop their great products further there will continue to be clever people out there creating jailbreak exploits and pushing the envelope for future iOS updates allowing me to keep modding my beloved iOS devices.

My LGBT Rant (From SameSame)

Let's face it, we live on an amazing planet full of vibrant, different, unique and imperfect stuff within it. I'm proud to be one of the unique things moving around on this rock and honoured to be surrounded by many others in the same situation. Amongst us all there is a large community of uneducated people who quite frankly don't want to be educated any further than the minute locked in stone education they currently possess. This lack of education does not discriminate. It affects people of all sexual orientations, race, religions and genders.

It seems to me somewhere along our human development we have lost the meanings of sexuality and gender and they have become blurred. For example I am a transsexual woman. I was born male and was always attracted to women so when I changed gender I felt incredible pressure to be with a man within the trans community. I was treated like an outcast for liking women. I never was into sucking dick so why would I change just because my gender now aligned with how I truly felt. I felt so pressured I dated a man and it failed so I'm back with a woman and incredibly happy. Here's where the blurring of gender and sexuality comes in from not only straight people but also gay people. I get questioned constantly after my shows on why I like women if I'm a woman? Surprisingly this is coming from a lesbian woman who also likes women. This person should know why I like women as a woman who does herself. People often ask me if I changed my gender to be with the same sex? I cant fathom how someone would even conceive the thought that I would need to change my gender for the sole purpose of having sex with a woman that I was already sleeping with pre transition.

The reason is that many will just never get it and I have no problem with that. How could I expect them to get it as they are very comfortable in their gender. They could never understand what a gender conflict is as they are gay or straight and being gay or straight is a sexuality issue. Honestly I'd never wish somebody to have to confront being trans as it is a tough thing to deal with for the trans person, their families and society. In saying that I'm not taking away from any gay person how hard it is to come and and be strong being yourself by expressing your sexuality and I'm certainly not asking for sympathy.

I do sometimes feel very overlooked in our alphabet soup community and often believe the reason is that many gay people can never truly understand what being trans is like, whereas a trans person can understand what it is like to be same sex attracted. I perform at all the major festivals in Australia each year and see it on a ground level. The gay male events including drag queens always take centre stage, followed by lesbians and drag kings and then a handful of trans events barely get mentioned. At some of these events Ive seen installations of urinals and celebrations of moulded butt plugs and often thought this doesn't represent me but it obviously represents a group of people so it needs to exist. It certainly doesn't educate anybody on political struggles but not everything needs to represent those struggles. It sometimes upsets me that so much emphasis is placed on such an event and two blocks away an amazing performer is sharing their story and talent in front of a handful of people. This demonstrates to me loudly once again that people in our community are so focused with sex that education comes second.

I also refuse to be labelled as somebody who does not understand gay men or just hates men because I'm lesbian. When I began my transition I had no idea about the community so I made many gay male friends, went to clubs and even volunteered for people living with HIV and was even horrified by the lack of education on that subject even though men were contracting the disease at an alarming rate. I have many gay male friends and value them so very much and if I don't agree with the bitchiness and BS from some of them well I just don't associate with them.

Honestly I don't even have many trans friends. I can't put my finger on the reason for this. Sometimes it's because I'm so sick to death of the infighting between crossdressers and transsexuals and endless the crying about being mistaken for a drag queens and how they feel isolated by gay men. Again I see this crap and leave that group of people leaving them to slog it out on Internet forums behind the safety of their PC screens. Plus as I mentioned earlier I still have some resentment towards many trans people for making me feel like an outcast when I first came out and not including me.

These days I'm a lesbian woman. I date a woman, I perform in front of mostly female audiences and also do some drag king work. I have read over the years that many male to female trans people feel isolated by lesbians but I myself have never experienced this. I've performed for dyke's on bikes and in front of all kinds of same sex attracted women. I have witnessed some male to female trans women be isolated at clubs and there has been many cases of it happening in women's only spaces in the past. I also believe there is a large section of the trans community within the lesbian scene. I've spoken to many women who believe they are men but are afraid to come out in fear of isolation from some women. I guess this goes back to my original point. If you believe you are a same sex attracted person of course you are not going to understand a gender variant person amongst you.

Sadly we are not perfect and we will never be perfect. There are uneducated people everywhere who would rather stay stupid and take the piss within the noise of a club or behind the comfort of a PC screen. I've got a better chance of winning lotto than expecting a community such as our own to understand each other as we are all so unique. What I would love is to every now and again meet someone in our community who genuinely wants to give a shit about someone same same but different, and by that I mean ask a question or two that doesn't include an inappropriate question about my genitals before asking my name.

I'm not writing this to gain sympathy or to start a fight or to flame an individual. I'd love to just once feel like somebody genuinely gives a shit about how many trans people were murdered on for Transgender Remembrance Day Nov 20th each year as they stuff another same sex petition under my nose at fair day and maybe step outside their comfort zone just once to understand somebody who is already on your side.

I used to be a big part of SameSame writing articles, reviews, featured blogs, photos, interviews and even worked in the office for a short period. The last couple of years I have stopped sharing my thoughts in online forums like samesame, not because of the trolls and bitchiness but I feel I can do more by performing on stage in front of people who want to come along to see a show and have a great time, be entertained and slightly more educated. Even if I reach one person at each show and lose all my money putting it on because most of the community would rather look at a urinal installation it doesn't matter, I'm still doing more than crying about issues in an online forum. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to put on such performances and reach people from all walks of life as a singing, comedic social worker. It's what I live for!!!

Ultimately though just do what makes you happy and try to walk a mile in another persons shoes to give them the same respect.

Melbourne Midsumma Shows 2011

Yes Melbourne I'm heading back home for some very special shows over the Midsumma Festival. After last years performance of my rock cabaret show "From Metal to Maternal" this year I'm doing a very personal intimate one night only show and also doing a few drag king spots.

I'll be opening my Midsumma appearances at Carnival on Sunday 16th Jan @ Birrrarung Marr, (Batman Avenue in between Flinders and and Swan St.  Behind Federation Square on the Yarra Stage Lower Terrace. I'll be hosting on stage from 11:35am - 12:35pm and then doing a special performance of a few songs from 12:45 - 12:55pm. So get yourself along to enjoy a day of amazing LGBT talent and fun.

I'll also be doing a very special event on Sat 5th Feb @ Neverwhere, 185 Smith St Collingwood called "An Evening with Jade Starr". This will be a solo intimate show featuring new material from my forthcoming CD mixed with some visual media and humour. London Calling.

That's right I'll be bringing my music to London sometime this 2011. I'm currently in the process of booking a handfull of shows in London and will hopefully be there for 3 weeks doing a mixture of solo shows, drag shows and a new version of my cabaret rock show "From Metal to Maternal".

As the dates get locked in I'll be announcing the tour shortly afterward. Will be a great opportunity to perform in front of the many fans I've made in the UK over the years. I can't wait!!!

FILTHY MAGGOTY CUNT RETURNS!

Yay it's metal time!!!

For those of you who have followed my career you would be well aware of the death metal bands I used to sing for. One of those bands was instrumental in me actually coming out to transition funnily enough even though it's content is quite disgusting. FMC or Filthy Maggoty Cunt was created back in 1999 by myself being fed up with the music industry mass producing crap with no substance. FMC was a death metal / grindcore band who's lyrics were over the top and vile on so many levels. We set out to offend everybody we possibly could, and we did!

FMC started out just me and my Playstation as the drumkit. I put together a handful of songs and hit a recording studio creating the debut CD "Sadomasadistikwankore". With songs like The Story of the Sadistik Seagul Fucker, Pure Anal and Leperleptic the CD got alot of interest very quickly. The real clinker was the marketing online for FMC. Our website was updated daily with so much silly crap that we instantly got a cult following. Our CD was banned in a few countries and it was time to book some shows.

I enlisted the services of some good friends, we wore a bunch of silly costumes, barely practiced the songs and before long we were touring interstate. The whole band was intended to be a joke from the start and all the way through the next few years we treated it as a big joke on everybody who actually liked the band. Most of our shows we performed in drag, I quickly became known as a shemale which was cool for me because it opened the door for me to actually transition.

We faked fights onstage, did tribute nights on boybands, acoustic shows, drag shows... You name it we did it. We offended minority groups and received alot of hate mail from Christian groups which made me laugh even harder. FMC released serveral demo's and split ep's, toured in Australia and today have a whole swag of hilarious photo's and videos from our time together. In 2003 I moved to Sydney so the band was over until 2006 I reformed FMC for one night only which was a barrel of laughs and chaos. Even today it's still possible we will reform and do something live again as is the chance of me releasing a new FMC CD in the future.

So I've decided to re-release the debut CD on iTunes with new artwork, totally remastered and with 5 bonus tracks. You can always head to our myspace to see just what all the frivolity was all about or just download the CD. GET IT HERE from iTunes for $16.99 AUD.

DreadCircus is back!!!!!

After a long stint away from DreadCircus instead investing my time into my show From Metal to Maternal which was draining to say the least. I've finally begun work on the 5th DreadCircus studio album with a working title of "gOS 3.0" - Gender Operating System 3.0. I'm not sure if it will be an EP or a full length album I guess as it progresses will be the decided of such fate. The new music is quite a departure from the last albums as I've decided to instead play more the music I actually listen to. It's sounding so far like a bizarre mix between Mr Bungle, Slayer, Muse, Bjork and Gotye. You can listen to some sample on the news link from the new improved website.

Yes you read right I've actually given the entire website a complete overhaul which is very exciting. I totally deleted the old website and started from scratch and I'm sure you will find it quite user friendly. Well that is if you can view flash (Damn you Apple iPhone). My obsession with iProducts.

If it's an electronic product that has an "i" at the beginning of it you can almost guarantee I own one. Yes I'm speaking of my fave topic Apple products. My first iProduct was an iPhone 3G back in 2008. I waited till the madness of it's release here in Australia had subsided laughing at all of the idiots lining up at midnight to get their precious little gadget before I got mine. Who would have known 2 years later I'd be doing the same thing to get my hands on the iPhone 4?

From the moment I unboxed my iPhone 3G I fell in love with it's amazing design and ease of use. I never got into the SMS revolution as I found the endless button mashing to be a chore and would always much rather just call somebody. Come to think of it I never really got into mobile phones that much as they were all pretty crappy. Getting an iPhone 3G got me back into listening to music. As a musician I had become quite jaded toward the music industry because of all the never ending crap artists that flooded the market. I began to sort through all my old CD's and then searching the net finding stuff I used to listen to in my teens and 20's and before long my music collection was back in tact and everyday my trusty iPhone was pumping tunes into my ears wherever I went.

Not only did I get back into music but another passion of mine had been rekindled, that being video games. Since breaking up with Erik I no longer had a Playstation so my iPhone became my games console and over the few short years iPhone has been around let me tell you the standard of games have developed into something quite incredible. Now for those of you who live in Sydney and catch public transport there is nothing better than zoning out into a hand held device with music and video games to break away from the endless array of zombies staring into the void traveling to work on a mobile morgue each morning.

Add into those features a bit of social networking like Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, MSN, Skype, Email and even Blogger trust me you are never bored. Not only has my iPhone come in handy traveling to work but on those long train trips going to Newcastle to see Mindy's family pass the 3 hour trip away nicely.

Oh yeah I almost forgot it's an awesome phone also LOL. I must admit the phone is the most underused function on my iPhone as there is so much else to do on it. So when I first got my iPhone I decided like many others to jailbreak the device to really make it my own. Apple have long tried to stop people jailbreaking their devices by labeling us all as hackers which is so very far from the truth.

Jailbreaking is not hacking! In short to jailbreak an iDevice is to open up the device to personal customizations like backgrounds, ringtones and adding applications that Apple wont approve because of partnerships they have with providers and alike. Jailbreaking is no longer considered illegal in the US but Apple remain vigilant restricting iDevice users from jailbreaking with every iOS update they release. The cat and mouse game will continue as long as they continue to play. Honestly I wouldn't want my iPhone if I couldn't jailbreak it as half of the cool stuff that makes it so awesome would be gone.

Whilst I was working at Salmat I actually won a iPod Nano for reaching targets on a campaign and Mindy also won an iPod Touch for great results. So we were beginning to build up quite a collection of Apple products it was like they were breeding. I was so glad Mindy got her first taste with the iPod Touch. Since she won it she rarely even uses her laptop anymore as all of her social networking stuff is available via her iPod.

Then in July Apple finally released the iPhone 4 and before you could blink there we were lining up with all of the other geeks for our new devices. We lined up from 9:30pm and walked out around 2am with a nice shiny iPhone 4 16GB. Sadly I actually wanted a 32GB but they sold out within 10 minutes. Luckily a day after getting the phone Mindy decided she wanted one also so I ordered a 32GB and gave her my 16GB one week later when my new iPhone 4 arrived. Not long after Mindy gave her iPod Touch away to her sister as it just pales in comaprison just like my old 3G.

I guess you could say we are Apple whores as between us we have 4 iDevices and are currently shopping for a Macbook and an iPad LOL. What can I say I love my iDevices they keep me in touch with everybody, I can advertise my music stuff, listen to my fave music, zone out to video games and a whole list of other stuff that just makes life a little more fun at the end of the day.

Spider-Man, Mirror's Edge, Dexter, Prince of Persia (Warrior Within), Splinter Cells, Dead Runner, Gangster, GTA, Dragon's Lair and Space Ace to name a few faves. The iPhone 4 is fucking cool on so many levels. It never slows down, multitasking rocks and the issues that were published about the death grip antenna have NEVER been an issue the 2 months I've owned mine. So if you are thinking of getting one do it as you wont be disappointed!

Welcome to my blog

Well I Thought it was about time I began writing a blog again. This blog will be a place to keep up to speed with my music, writing, views and everyday goings on in my life.

Hopefully you the reader will get something out of my writings here as I expect it to be a wild ride. I expect many of you will disagree with my ramblings and some will agree. This is just the kind of thing I'm expecting and hope happens.
